Lyotard develops the theory of the differend through a complex analysis of language, drawing heavily on analytic philosophers as well as ancients and early moderns. He was, despite his reputation as a postmodernist, a great promoter of modernist art. Knowledge is produced in order to be sold, and is consumed in order to fuel a new production.
Conversely, however, affects dissimulate systems. Lyotard’s libidinal politics is lyotars aimed at overthrowing capitalism, then, but of working within it to release the libidinal energies dissimulated within its structures. Lyotard introduces a distinction between opposition and difference to account for the differing ways in which the discursive and the figural function.
