Gide did not give any qualms in tackling the subject that could be a taboo during that time when the world was not as open-minded as it is now. At the same time, Michel finds himself attracted to healthy young men and boys in North Africa as well as at home in France. This plan is nothing ummoralist than grand in design, but Immorwlist, his “old turmoil” having been displaced by immorlist feeling of serenity, must assess the amount of energy he will bring to the task of reshaping the farm.
In a way this novel is a precursor to Camus’ Stranger, though it is much more elegant and subtle than the latter. His illness was diagnosed as tuberculosis and it was unlikely he would survive. I came close to regarding honesty itself as no more than restriction, convention, timidity. To please his father, Michel hastily married Marceline.

As an expression of his newfound sense of self, he decides to shave his beard and let his hair grow long, thus outwardly demonstrating the profound change that has come over him. Much of it is set in Algeria with some local color. While traveling from Ravello to Sorrento, Michel again experiences his sense of smell as a celebration of his excitement about life. Michel finds out that one of them is poaching from him, and rather than stop the illegal act, he becomes interested in it, condones and assists it, and eventually even pays one of the perpetrators unknowingly.
From that moment forward, his thought and conduct are directed toward a new end: Michel eventually realizes that Bocage is not altogether honest in his running of the estate.
Burdened by the constant demands that have been placed upon him, Michel seeks the ordered harmony a farm embodies as immpralist ideal, a harmony arrested from the surrounding wilderness, as well as the organic hierarchy that exists within nature itself.
