Very well written and very touching. As they grow the kids learn to lie, steal and run scams at the same time they face gang violence, pressure from their large Irish immigrant family to appear acceptable to the community and watch out for one another.
After seeing the film Black Mass, I decided to listen to the audiobook. Full of insight into the impact that poverty and violence has on the people in his life, Michael MacDonald paints a loving portrait of both his immediate family and his extended family, the community.

I do believe all these realities create huge roadblocks to people being able to change their predicament.
